HOUSE FY2007 L/HHS APPROPRIATIONS SUBCOMMITTEE MARK-UP

 

On Wednesday, June 7, 2006, the House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee approved its FY2007 bill by a vote of 9-7, along party lines, that essentially flat funds NIH in FY2007. The House Appropriations Committee is expected to consider the bill sometime next week.

SENATE FY2007 APPROPRIATIONS ALLOCATIONS

 

Because the House and Senate were unable to agree on a joint budget resolution (which would have set overall spending limits for the year), the Senate is attempting to attach its own FY2007 spending caps to this year’s emergency supplemental appropriations bill. Once the Senate determines its overall FY2007 budget cap, Senate Appropriations Chairman Thad Cochran (R-MS) will be able to provide individual allocations to each of his twelve appropriations subcommittees.

The decision by the House L/HHS Appropriations Subcommittee to flat fund NIH is extremely disappointing, and is being viewed as a slap in the face to moderate Republicans, health research proponents and patient group advocates who fought so hard to increase the amount of funds for important health and education programs, including NIH. Moderate Republicans had received assurances from House leaders that a total of $7.1 billion would be provided for health and education programs prior to finalizing the FY2007 L/HHS Appropriations bill.

FASEB’S CAPITOL HILL DAY (JUNE 5-6, 2006)

Rep. Mike Castle Receives FASEB's Public Service Award

 

In an effort to make policymakers aware of the importance of biomedical, physical sciences and agricultural research, FASEB’s Office of Public Affairs coordinated its 2nd Annual “Capitol Hill Day,” on June 5-6th. FASEB’s Board and Science Policy Committee members met with twenty Congressional offices to discuss how research is improving lives, reducing the burden of illness and improving the economy.
