In 2005, FASEB's Educating About Evolution Subcommittee was formed to address the current challenges to teaching evolution and the debate surrounding intelligent design and to educate people about the importance of evolutionary theory in biomedical research.

APS, the American Physiological Society, has an online compilation of resources for teaching evolution.

The American Society of Human Genetics has an ongoing series of essays describing the connection between genetics and evolution.

The FASEB Journal has published several editorials by Editor Gerald Weissmann addressing challenges to the teaching of evolution:

* The Facts of Evolution: Fighting the Endarkenment
* Intelligent Design: Hooke and the Lynxes
* Swift-Boating Darwin: Alternative or Complementary Science

PAST EVENTS

April 4, 2006: ASBMB, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, hosted a symposium on Teaching the Science of Evolution Under the Threat of Alternative Views at the 2006 Annual Experimental Biology meeting in San Francisco. Visit the link to watch a streaming video of the event.

February 17, 2006: The Society for Developmental Biology, together with the National Academy of Sciences and the Carnegie Institution of Washington, co-organized two sessions addressing the issue of teaching science and evolution at the upcoming AAAS Annual Meeting in St. Louis, MO:
10:30 a.m. – Noon Symposium: Teaching and Learning about Science: Challenges and Opportunities Concerning Evolution

1:45 – 4:45 p.m. Clinic: Teaching and Learning about Science: Addressing Challenges Collaboratively. Details of the program and list of co-sponsoring scientific and professional societies are found here.

February 19, 2006: The American Association for the Advancement of Science hosted Evolution on the Front Line: An Event for St. Louis-area Teachers to give teachers a voice on the evolution issue and a way to tell the scientific community how to best support them. FASEB is proud to sponsor this event.
